William Glasser’s
“The
QualitySchool Teacher”

¨Teachers lead, don’t boss. (principal = lead management)

¨Classroom configuration = circle

¨Teacher = professional = interested in quality

¨No memorization in quality school.

¨No compulsory homework.

¨Parents should be involved in the new program => treat their children the same way:
THEY SHOULD NOT NAG, PUNISH, OR REWARD THEIR CHILDREN FOR DOING SCHOOLWORK

¨Quality school = all human beings have 5 basic needs: LOVE, POWER, FREEDOM, FUN, SURVIVAL.

¨6 Conditions of quality:

1.Warm, supportive classroom environment.

2.Students should be asked to do only useful work.

3.Students are always asked to do the best they can do.

4.Students are asked to evaluate their own work and improve it.

5.Quality work always feels good.

6.Quality work is never destructive.

¨“The better we know someone and the more we like about what we know, the harder we will work for that person.” P. 24
Choice Theory: we will work hard for those

1.we care for (belonging)

2.we respect and who respect us (power)

3.we will work hard for those with whom we laugh (fun)

4.who allow us to think and act for ourselves (freedom)

5.who help us to make our lives secure (survival)

¨Your students need to know you and like you. Tell them...

1.Who you are

2.What you stand for

3.What you will ask them to do

4.What you will not ask them to do

5.What you will do for them

6.What you will not do for them

¨Teach only information that ...

1.is directly related to a life skill

2.students express a desire to learn

3.the teacher believes is especially useful

4.is required for college

¨Teach useful skills; a skill-based curriculum. The best way to do that is to relate what we are trying to teach to the real world.

¨As you teach, emphasize what interests you + Have respect for your students’ interests. (p. 54)

¨Quality schoolwork: Conduct a quality “show and tell” in which any student can bring anything that he or she thinks is quality to show or demonstrate to the class.

¨There is no one road to quality. While improvement is the key, it can follow different roads. (p. 59)

¨Do not grade these paragraphs. Grades tend to turn the process off because the students work for your grade instead of their own judgment of quality. Tell them that all you want is improvement and that it is important that they, not you, be the judge of how much they have improved the original paragraph. (p. 61)

¨Quality does not happen: it has to be carefully nurtured into existence.

¨Quality is mostly achieved through cooperation... Quality is rarely a do-it-yourself process; there is no shame in asking for help. The competition is with oneself as each student works to improve what he or she does. P.62

¨What students need to get from school is the confidence, based on personal experience, that no matter what they choose to do, they can do a quality job. 65-66

¨Vocational skills: buy a run-down house => school project to teach students how to renovate it.p. 69

¨Abandon our traditional education system: Teach, Test, Rank, and Coerce the losers. p. 74

¨Concurrent evaluation: SE Few formal tests and no compulsory homework; the students’ progress depends on what they do in class; group work; each student works alone to try to move ahead in the book and if he/she gets stuck, s/he would have to ask another student in the group, who is ahead of him/her for help. All that is required is to work hard during this 45 to 50 minute period. When students believe they have mastered a group of problems, they would have to SHOW the teaching assistants how they can work then EXPLAIN why they did what they did. (Luck would no more play a part in determining what a student knows). pp.77-78

¨Concurrent evaluation - From competence to quality: SIR (Self-evaluation, Improve, Repeat)

¨Concurrent evaluation = SESIR: Show what you are doing; Explain how you achieved that; Evaluate what you have done to see if you can still improve it; Improve it; Repeat the evaluation and improvement process until you believe the work is called “quality.” P. 84

¨Sources of help in the classroom: several; most important = from own class(es).

¨Choice Theory= a theory of how we always try to control our lives to best satisfy the following 5 needs: LOVE and friendship, POWER (gaining and keeping respect), FREEDOM, FUN, SURVIVAL (security).P. 112

¨Learning for the sake of Learning!P.115
